Superintendent of Schools Dr. Larrie Reynolds has said that he will accept the position offered to him in the Mount Olive School District, and will tender his resignation to the Board of Education soon. He will continue on in his position as Pequannock’s superintendent until February, when he will make the transition to Mount Olive.

The Mount Olive Board of Education voted 7-1 with one abstention on Monday night to approve Reynolds as its choice to fill the superintendent spot.

“I’ve decided to take the position,” Reynolds said in an interview on Tuesday. “I’m excited to be a part of the Mount Olive team, and I’d like to be able to go there with an open mind and find out what’s happening there. I’m looking towards the future; I’m not going to live in the past.”

Reynolds, who came to the Pequannock district in 2006, has been the subject of much controversy in the township since news came out about three weeks ago that he was among the finalists for the Mount Olive superintendent’s position.

Reynolds said that he was, “amazed and really speechless” at the level of support that people have shown him in recent weeks.

“I’m awed by it, I don’t understand it, but I’m appreciative of it. I have done everything I can to consider that point of view, and it was a major factor in the last few days. But I felt it’s time for me to move on, considering the circumstances I’ve found myself in,” Reynolds said.

Reynolds is expected to give his 90-day notice of departure, as outlined in his contract. Other terms of his departure are still under negotiation.

“I’ve been greatly honored, and really appreciate the opportunity to serve the kids of Pequannock. It has been one of the better things in my life, and under different circumstances I might have found this to be a permanent home,” Reynolds said.
