Mount Olive Chamber of Commerce to honor scholarship winner Bets
Mount Olive High School senior, Betsy Smith, will receive the Mount Olive Area Chamber of Commerce's 2008 Scholarship Award at its June meeting, newly named after a town icon.
This year, the scholarship has been renamed in memory of an exceptional area resident, Elmira "Al" Matcha. "Al" recently passed away after building a rich history in the area.
The monthly meeting will take place Tuesday, June 17 at the Mount Olive Public Library. The cost to attend is $20 for members and $30 for guests.
Dr. Barbara-Jayne Lewthwaite, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Chief Academic Officer at Centenary College, will be the guest speaker.
Smith, who will major in Accounting/Finance at Penn State in the fall, is in the top 10% of her class, has outstanding SAT scores and has been very active in her school and community.
Among her notable achievements to the community, Matcha gave time and effort to the local, state and national PTA, eventually earning her a Lifetime Membership in the national organization.
She was also a member of both Sussex and Northwest Morris Business & Professional Women's Club. In addition, she was a founding member of the New Jersey Association of Women Business Owners (NJAWBA) and she was instrumental in starting and encouraging its Warren-Sussex Chapter. In 1985, both organizations singled her out as its Woman of the Year.
Her incredible resume is filled out with a Distinguished Service Award from the Mount Olive Area Chamber of Commerce, honors from the Women's Business Conference, the Mosaic Award from Centenary College for 50 years of service, named a Community Treasure by Mount Olive Township on her 90th birthday, presented a Governor's Outstanding Achievement Award and numerous letters of commendation from the Morris County Parks Commission and other groups.
