The Business Coalition at the New Jersey Chamber of Commerce provided a Scavenger Hunt to celebrate Career Expo Day.  The purpose of the Scavenger Hunt was to reinforce factual data that the students learned in their classes in order for them to make wise choices regarding course selection, good work/study habits, and the kinds of careers that will be awaiting them as the enter into the global economy of the twenty-first century.  Seventh grade students were provided a form to complete and submit by the end of their lunch period on May 28, Career Expo Day held at Mount Olive Middle School, Budd Lake.

Members from the Mount Olive Chamber of Commerce, Township Education Foundation, Township Library Board, instructors from the Community School at Mount Olive as well as other community members participated in the Career Expo.  Some of the careers were banking and financial planning; web design; professional writing; staff recruiting; civil, mechanical, chemical and nuclear engineering, corporate, personal, and criminal lawyers; education, police and human resources.  Each professional spoke to small groups of students throughout the morning in math, science, social studies and language arts classes to provide the students time to ask questions about the specific career.  Each professional conducted a “Mock Interview” so that students could get a clear understanding of real life expectations.  The professionals emphasized the importance of making good choices when selecting high school classes, good grades, volunteering, punctuality, as well as appropriate clothing to wear to an interview and to work.

The day concluded when Sue Herring, Programs Manager from The Business Coalition for Educational Excellence at the New Jersey Chamber of Commerce arrived with a special box for students to submit their scavenger hunt answer sheets. Human Resource Officers, Janet Kirkland and Carrie Sayers from Lowe’s of Mount Olive, scored the sheets.   Laura Cantor, scoring 100%, was awarded an i Pod.  Nine other students were awarded gift certificates.   Jersey Central Power Light is the sponsor of the Scavenger Hunt program throughout the state.  The Business Coalition provided Mount Olive Middle School with over five hundred dollars worth of gifts and teaching supplies.
