Lenape Valley HS senior Corrigan receives caring award
Lenape Valley Regional High School senior Erin Corrigan was honored at the annual Sussex County High School Caring Award Program, May 22.
The SCSCA serves as a professional resource and sounding board for Sussex County school counselors, grades K-12. In addition to our quarterly meetings, the Association sponsors two Caring Awards Programs and a scholarship program for college bound seniors.
According to her guidance counselor Mr. Richard Jackson, Corrigan is “a competent student, an exemplary school citizen and as a young adult who is deeply concerned about the welfare of others.” Corrigan holds a cumulative 3.1 GPA, plays three sports (soccer, basketball and track) and is a member of the co-curricular activities DECA, Peer-to-Peer and Student Council). In addition to academic, athletic and social activities, she has been a Peer Minister at her church. As a Peer Minister, she has helped to plan and run confirmation retreats twice a year. Additionally, she has been involved with the youth fellowship program, fundraising activities and community service projects. Last summer, Corrigan traveled to New York State with twenty other teenagers with the Habitat for Humanity Program to assist in the rebuilding and the restoration of homes for the elderly and needy. Corrigan’s youth pastor describes Erin as “a leader with a big heart” and “one who possesses the ability to make almost anyone smile and bring cheer into a room”. And, he goes on to say this: “I know that her desire to give of herself is rooted in her eagerness to elevate the society she encounters to a more charitable level of love and fellowship.”
According to Jackson, Corrigan’s community service intensified this school year. At the beginning of the school year, Erin volunteered for the Stanhope-Netcong American Legion Ambulance Corps and took weekend classes to become certified as an Emergency Medical Technician. After much hard work—involving 16 hours per weekend and 2-3 emergency response calls per week—Corrigan became certified in January. Each weekend, Erin continues to attend practice drills and to respond to emergency calls in response to automobile accidents and medical emergencies. Additional volunteer duties include attending monthly meetings, assisting with fundraisers, and attending on-going required classes in order to maintain her EMT license.
